Nick Weatherton ’11 was one of the small population of hopefuls who was accepted to and graduated from the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy. “The people that you meet at SU – fellow students as well as faculty – will be assets to you for life,” said Weatherton. “It’s a small enough place that everybody will remember you and be willing to help.”
Weatherton’s fondest memories include being a part of some of the intramural sports the university had to offer.
Weatherton is a clinical pharmacy specialist in the Department of Veterans Affairs at Ambulatory Care in Charlottesville, Virginia. In this position, he sees patients who are referred to him by their primary care providers, and need extra help with their chronic health conditions such as diabetes. “I get to develop relationships with and change their medications utilizing my own prescriptive authority,” said Weatherton.
The most rewarding part of Weatherton’s career is creating a connection with his patients by making sure they feel that their problems are truly being heard. “You get bonus points if you can help solve their problem,” said Weatherton.
Weatherton is also the founder of his own company called GradVantageRx. He started the business in 2018, and it helps pharmacy students match into residencies and fellowships. Hee has also served as an assistant professor of pharmacology and pharmacotherapy and has taught graduate students in pharmacy, nursing and physician’s assistant programs. Weatherton has served as a specialist consultant and a subject matter expert for several start-up companies in the medical field as well.
Weatherton not only believes that Shenandoah provided him with a fantastic education, but also a great community of friends, colleagues and professors, which helped him grow into a mature practitioner.
Weatherton’s advice to students is: “Keep all of your options open. Keep your grades up, keep your relationships up, keep your head up!”
